Agony of a Wounded Elephant, Villagers Vigil, Forest Apathy

An wounded wild elephant has been writhing in pain for the last 7 days at Ahutoli, Kondoli, Kothiatoli Range, Nagaon. Villagers allege that forest staff have failed to provide any medical care to the hapless pachyderm in spite of visiting the place several times. The condition of the elephant has deteriorated in the last few days and villagers, who have kept a vigil ever since it was discovered, are furious at the apathy of the forest staff and their inability to provide any succour to the dying animal. They are sure that the elephant was shot, pointing to the bullet hole like wounds on the head, but could have been saved by timely medical aid. The dead body of another elephant, also shot and with its tusks hacked, was also recovered from these parts a few months back. There are several other reports of elephants being killed in the Karbi hills that can not be verified due to safety issues owing the presence of militants and their possible involvement in wildlife trade.
