Illegal Logging continues unabated in the Karbi foothills

Members of Green Guard Nature Organization recently visited Kondoliara and Hodhodi areas bordering the Swang RF to document the rampant felling of trees by timber dealers. Hemanta SharmaRanjan BarthakurDulu Bora and Rana Paul visited these areas, bordering Lungsung, Nagaon district, after several reports of illegal logging activities across the Karbi foothills. The rampant destruction of these pristine wildlife habitat, part of the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong Elephant Reserve has been continuing since that last few years. Several attempts by the Green Guard Nature Organization to expose the nexus between the timber mafia and the authorities, including an article in the venerable Sanctuary Asia, has yielded no results. These species rich areas are also the killing fields of several species of protected fauna and poachers have targeted elephants, leopards, owls, deer, hornbills and in recent times, the Tokay Gecko.
