People's Climate March, Chapanala, Nagaon September 21, 2014

A People's Climate March was organized at Chapanala, Nagaon, today in solidarity with the People's Climate March at New York city to urge world leaders gathered there for the UN Climate summit to take decisive action on climate change before it's too late. More than 2800 events are being organized in 166 countries across the globe in support of the main event at New York, which is set to be the biggest climate march in history. In spite of the intermittent rain since this morning, young men, women & children gathered at the weekly Sunday market at Chapanala Chariali and raised slogans against deforestation, wildlife poaching and the abuse of nature. Dulu Bora explained how climate change was already affecting people in the region and the threat of food and water scarcity in the near future. He also elaborated the threat of influx of climate refugees from Bangladesh due to rising sea water levels from polar melting in a rapidly warming world. The participants held up placards to save water, forests, nature and demanded the utilization of cold-mix road construction to reduce carbon pollution. Due to a general lack of awareness about these issues, today's event organized by Green Guard Nature Organization was perhaps the only one in the entire north east region, although scores of events have being scheduled at other parts of India.
