An awareness camp for the students of St. Theresa's School, Morigaon was held yesterday at the school premises at Shankardev Nagar on the occasion of Earth Day 2014. A collaborative effort between Sanctuary Asia, Earth Day Network, ROSE, Morigaon and Green Guard Nature Organization, the presentation focussed on the challenges to the region from climate change and global warming, and the available solutions, with special reference to Green Cities, the theme for the Earth Day celebrations this year. Around 250 students and teachers of the school attended the presentation conducted by Rituraj Phukan, Secretary General of GGNO. Rituraj Phukan has trained as a Climate Leader under former US Vice President and Climate Reality Project Chairman Al Gore and was also the first person from north east India to accompany polar explorer and environmentalist Robert Swan, the only man to have walked to both the poles, to Antarctica last year. Others present include Dip Jyoti Borah of ROSE, also a teacher at the school and GGNO members Ranjan Barthakur, Asst. Secretary, Dulu Bora and Debajit Kalita. After the presentaion, there was an interactive session with the students asking several questions from the presenter. The presentation was preceded by a brief felicitation of the members of Green Guard Nature Organization by the school authorities and ended with the rendition of the school prayer.
