Elephant Fodder Plantation 2014

The 2nd phase of the Elephant Fodder Plantation Programme, 2014, was undertaken by members of Green Guard Nature Organization and fringe forest communities from the villages of Borghat, Udmari, Kothaguri, Jharubasti and Pangchogaon, at the Karbi foothills near Chapanala, Nagaon, under the leadership of our Executive member Dulu Bora on the 30th of March 2014. The saplings and stumps of 'Bhim Kol', the giant banana variety relished by elephants, were transported for storage at Bagherghati, at the base of the Karbi foothills near the Swang RF area. In the next phase, these will be transported by 4WD vehicles up to the areas of plantation in the selected patches left barren by the the practice of jhum or shifting cultivation in the hills. The programme, launched last year, is one of several home-grown ideas implemented in the Karbi foothills along the Nagaon- Karbi Anglong border with these communities affected by elephant depredation. It is hoped that besides reducing Human-Elephant Conflict in these areas, these initiatives will also restore some amount of the age-old bonding that once existed between men and beast.
